Shubhadra was the daughter of Vasudeva and Rohini. Krishna and Balaram were her brothers. She was born after Krishna moved all Yadavas to Dwarka, so she was much younger than both brothers.

The last destination of Arjuna’s 12 years of exile was Dwaraka, Krisha’s home. Where Krisha invited Arjuna to stay in Dwarka for the Monsoon season but disguised him as a Brahmin so nobody could recognize him. During his stay there Arjuna was impressed by the beauty of Shubhadra and asked Krishna for her hand in marriage. After thinking Krishna suggested abducting Shubhadra as his brother Balaram wanted to marry her to Duryodhana.

Following Krishna’s advice and with Shubhdra’s consent Arjuna abducted her. They rode away in a chariot, and Shubhadra held the reins, symbolizing her willingness. Initially, Balaram was furious but after talking with Krishna he accepted the marriage.  Dwarka held the grand celebration for their marriage.

Abhimanyu was trained by his father and his uncles Krishna and Balaram. He was married to Uttara, daughter of king Virata to seal an alliance between the Pandavas and the royal family of Virata for the upcoming war of Kurukshetra.

Abhimanyu has taken part in the war of Mahabharat and killed important personalities such as Kumara Lakshmana, the son of Duryodhana, and Brihadbala, the king of Kosala belonging to the Ikshwaku dynasty.

On the 13th Day of the Mahabharat War

Abhimanyu attacking Kauravas in Chakravyuh

On the 13th day of the Kurukshetra war, Drona creates a Chakravyu to capture Yudhistira. Kauravas knew that only Arjuna and Krisha broke this formation so Arjuna was driven away by Samshaptakas. Samshaptakas (Trigartas) are warriors who had taken an oath to die or kill Arjuna. Arjuna and Krishna were busy fighting them the whole day and were on another part of the Kurukshetra.

Abhimanyu knew how to enter the formation but he didn’t know how to get out, so supported by other Pandava warriors he started to break the formation. He swiftly entered inside, but all the other warriors were stopped by Jayadrata as he got the boon from Shiva that he would be able to counter Pandavas for one day except for Arjuna.

Abhimanyu had fought heroically, no one was able to stop him. Finally, kauravas broke the code of the war and six Maharathas – Drona, Karna, Kripa, Ashwathama, Duryodhana, and Dushasana – and numerous other warriors together attacked Abhimanyu. Before falling down, Abhimanyu had killed scores of Kauravas including many important warriors like Martikavata of Bhoja, Shatrunjaya, Chandraketu, Mahavega, Suvarcha, and Suryabhasa.

He also killed younger brothers of Shalya and Karna, Vastiya, Shalya’s son, one hundred princes of various kingdoms, Lakshmana (Duryodhana’s son ), Kraha’s son, Vrindarka, and Brihadbala (king of Kosala).

A tired and wounded Abhimanyu was finally killed by Dushasana’s son.

At last…

When Abhimanyu died in the war, her wife Uttara was pregnant. After the war, Ashawasthama tried to kill his unborn child but Krishna saved him. This child was King Parikthita who became the successor of the Kuru kingdom Hastinapur. When Pandavas along with Draupadi decided to go on pilgrimage, Shubhadra stayed at Hastinapur and took care of his grandchild Parikhita.
